Substance Use & Prevention
Student Assistance Program
Since 1996, the mission of the Student Assistance Program has been to ensure the safety, health and well-being of all students through programs that emphasize alcohol, tobacco, other drug intervention and support programs in the Olympia School District. Our comprehensive approach provides prevention education and intervention while targeting the reduction of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. Our Prevention and Intervention Specialists provide services to students and families directly related to substance abuse and other risk-taking behaviors affecting success in school and beyond. Identified students receive formalized screenings/evaluations, individual and/or small group education, and ongoing recovery support services.
Services We Provide
Prevention Education
- Assists students with alcohol and other drug education to enhance positive life choices while reducing at-risk behaviors.
Individualized Support
- Individual support is provided for those students who have exhibited substance use and/or high -risk behaviors, have requested individual sessions, or those students who would benefit more from an individualized program.
Intervention
- Identified students and families are provided assistance through individual and/or group support.
Recovery Support
- Provides support to students returning to school from an intensive treatment program.
Referral Services
- Prevention and Intervention specialists work in coordination with community resources to provide additional support when individuals are in need of in-patient, out-patient treatment or mental health services.
How To Refer
- Referrals to the Student Assistance Program may be made by staff, parents, students or other concerned individuals or by contacting the Prevention/ Intervention specialist assigned to their school.
Community Connections
- The development and implementation of our comprehensive program includes a strong community component. Community involvement includes on-going program coordination and communication with Prevention/Intervention Programs, the Thurston County Courts, Community Youth Services, and community treatment providers.
